Holafly eSIM Not Working? How to Fix It

Aug 13, 2026  · Written by Enola Soha  · 12

Nine checks that fix almost every Holafly eSIM problem, including the daily hotspot cap and the speed reduction that often looks like a fault.

Your Holafly eSIM is installed, you have landed, and there is no data. It is a horrible moment, usually happening in an airport when you most need a map. The good news is that the overwhelming majority of these problems are settings issues on the phone rather than anything actually broken, and you can fix them yourself in a few minutes.

Work down this list in order. It is arranged from most common cause to least, so most people are back online before they reach the bottom.

Prices and settings in this guide were checked by hand in August 2026. Providers change plans often, so always confirm on the provider page before you buy.

1. Data roaming is switched off

Do I need to turn on roaming for Holafly eSIMs?

Yes. A Holafly eSIM connects through a local partner network, and your phone treats that as roaming. Data roaming has to be on for the Holafly line or you get no data at all. Leave it off on your home SIM so your normal carrier never bills you.

This is the cause more often than every other reason put together. A travel eSIM works by connecting to a local partner network, which technically counts as roaming. If roaming is off for that line, you get no data at all.

On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, tap the Holafly line, then switch Data Roaming on.

On Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, tap the Holafly line, then enable Roaming. On Samsung it is Settings, then Connections, then Mobile networks, then Data roaming.

Turning this on does not create a bill. The plan is prepaid and your home carrier is not involved. Do keep roaming switched off on your home SIM though, because that line is the one that can charge you.

2. Your phone is using the wrong line for data

Why is my Holafly cellular data not working when the signal looks fine?

Because the bars can be coming from your home SIM while the Holafly line sits idle. A phone shows one set of bars but sends data down whichever line you picked for cellular data. Point that setting at Holafly and the connection appears.

You can install an eSIM perfectly and still route all your data through your home SIM without noticing. People often discover this weeks later on a roaming bill.

On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data, and select the Holafly line.

On Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then set the preferred SIM for mobile data.

While you are there, make sure Allow Cellular Data Switching is off on iPhone. That setting quietly falls back to your home SIM when the travel line is weak, which is exactly what you do not want.

3. The plan has not actually started

How can I tell if my Holafly eSIM is working?

Open your Holafly account and check the plan reads as active and is inside its validity window. On the phone, the Holafly line should show a carrier name rather than No Service. If either of those is missing, the plan has not started yet.

Most travel eSIMs begin counting when they first connect at the destination, not when you buy them. If you installed the eSIM but never turned roaming on after landing, the plan may still be dormant.

Check your Holafly account or app to see whether the plan shows as active and how much data is left. If it shows as expired, that is a different problem and no amount of settings changes will help.

4. No network selected

Why did my Holafly eSIM suddenly stop working?

An eSIM that worked and then died has usually lost its network rather than its plan. Phones drop a partner network when you cross a border or leave coverage, then fail to pick a new one automatically. Choosing an operator by hand brings it back.

Sometimes the phone simply fails to pick a partner network automatically, particularly right after landing.

  1. Turn airplane mode on, wait ten seconds, turn it off. This forces a fresh network search and fixes a surprising number of cases.
  2. If that fails, go into network selection and choose a carrier by hand. On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, tap the line, then Network Selection, turn off Automatic and pick from the list. On Android the equivalent lives under Mobile networks, then Network operators.
  3. Give each attempt two or three minutes before deciding it has not worked.

5. The APN is missing or wrong

What are the Holafly APN settings on iPhone and Android?

Holafly gives the APN in your activation email and in your account, and it changes by destination, so copy it from there rather than from a forum post. On iPhone it sits under Cellular Data Network. On Android it is under Access Point Names. One wrong character stops data.

Occasionally the access point name does not configure itself. Your provider publishes the correct APN in their setup instructions or confirmation email.

On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, tap the line, then Cellular Data Network.

On Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Access Point Names.

Type it exactly as given, with no capital letters or spaces added. If there is no APN field on your iPhone, your carrier profile has locked it, which usually means the handset is not fully unlocked.

6. The QR code will not install in the first place

Why will the Holafly QR code not install?

Usually one of three things. The code has already been used, because a QR code installs once and once only. Or the phone is not eSIM capable or is locked to a carrier. Or there is no internet connection to complete the download.

  • You must be on Wi-Fi. The profile downloads over the internet, and you cannot download it using the connection you are trying to set up.
  • You cannot scan a code displayed on the same phone you are installing to. Open the email on a laptop or a second device, or use manual entry with the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
  • If it says the code is already used, the profile has been installed once already. Most eSIM profiles install a single time only, so you need the provider to reissue it.

7. Things specific to Holafly plans

Why has my Holafly hotspot stopped working?

Holafly allows hotspot sharing but caps it at one gigabyte per day on their unlimited plans, checked on their own plan pages in August 2026. If your laptop lost its connection while your phone stayed online, you have met that cap. It resets on the next daily cycle.

Holafly sells unlimited plans rather than fixed sizes, which changes what "not working" usually means. You are far less likely to have run out of data, and far more likely to be looking at a speed reduction under their fair use policy. A connection that loads text but stalls on video is the classic sign.

The other thing that catches people is hotspot. Holafly permits sharing but caps it at one gigabyte per day, checked on their own plan pages in August 2026. If your laptop worked this morning and stopped this afternoon while your phone is still fine, you have very likely hit that daily sharing cap rather than found a fault. It resets the next day.

Because there is no data counter to check in the usual sense, it is worth confirming in your Holafly account that the plan is inside its validity window before you spend time on settings.

8. It connects but everything is slow

Why is my Holafly data so slow?

Slow but working is nearly always policy rather than a fault. Every unlimited travel plan in this industry cuts speed once you pass a daily full speed allowance. If text loads and video stalls, you are past that point and no setting on the phone lifts it.

First, check whether you have passed the daily full speed allowance. Every unlimited travel plan in this industry reduces speed after a daily threshold, and a slow but working connection usually means you have hit it.

If that is not it, you may be attached to a weaker partner network. Toggle airplane mode, or select a different operator manually using the steps in section four. Signal strength matters too, so try moving nearer a window before blaming the plan.

9. When it really is not your phone

Is Holafly down, or is it just me?

Real outages are uncommon and rarely hit one person alone. Before you assume one, put the eSIM in a second phone or try a different part of town. If another device on the same plan also fails somewhere else, send Holafly support those details.

If you have worked through all of the above and still have nothing, the problem sits with the provisioning rather than your settings. At that point contact Holafly support with your order number and tell them precisely what you have already tried, which usually gets you past the first line script much faster.

Two things worth asking them directly: whether the plan shows as active on their side, and whether the profile can be reissued if it appears to have failed provisioning.

Holafly very slow? Read this before you blame the network

Holafly eSIM not working on Samsung or Android?

Android spreads these controls across several menus, which is why Samsung owners report more trouble. Check SIM manager to confirm the Holafly line is set for mobile data, switch data roaming on for that line, then check the APN under Access Point Names.

Searches for Holafly very slow outnumber almost every other Holafly problem, and the cause is usually policy rather than fault. Holafly's unlimited plans cap hotspot sharing at 1 GB per day, their own plan pages say so, and heavy overall use on an unlimited plan can meet fair use throttling. When that happens the connection does not break, it wades: messages send, images crawl, video gives up. If your speed died specifically while tethering a laptop, the hotspot cap is almost certainly what you hit, and it resets on the plan's daily cycle.

Before concluding you are throttled, rule out the ordinary suspects: run a speed test standing near a window, toggle airplane mode for ten seconds, and try manual selection of a different local network, congestion on one tower reads exactly like a provider problem. If full speed returns on another network, it was never Holafly. If the slowness follows you everywhere and started after heavy use, that is the fair use policy doing what the small print said it would, and no setting on the phone lifts it. The honest fix for the next trip is a plan whose limits match how you actually use data, which is why we publish exactly what happens after every allowance on our plans rather than leaving it to a support chat.

A checklist you can screenshot

How do I fix an eSIM that is not working?

Work through it in order. Data roaming on, correct line chosen for data, home SIM roaming off, airplane mode off and on, network picked by hand, APN matching the provider, plan showing as active. That sequence clears almost every case in about three minutes.

  1. Data roaming ON for the travel line.
  2. Travel line selected for cellular data.
  3. Home SIM data roaming OFF.
  4. Airplane mode off and on again.
  5. Network selected manually if automatic fails.
  6. APN matching the provider's instructions.
  7. Plan showing as active in the provider's app.

Seven checks, about three minutes. That covers nearly everything.

Questions people ask about Holafly eSIMs

Why is my travel eSIM not working even though it installed fine?

Installing and connecting are two separate steps. A profile can sit on the phone perfectly while data roaming is off, the wrong line is set for data, or the plan has not been started. Installation only proves the download worked.

Can I use a Holafly eSIM and my normal SIM at the same time?

Yes, and most people should. Keep your home number active for calls and messages, set the travel eSIM as the line for cellular data, and switch data roaming off on the home line so your usual carrier cannot charge you.

Does deleting and reinstalling a Holafly eSIM fix it?

Rarely, and it can make things worse. Most QR codes install once only, so removing a working profile can leave you with nothing to reinstall. Try every setting first and contact support before you delete anything.

What happens when a Holafly plan expires?

The plan stops and the profile stays on your phone doing nothing. An expired plan looks identical to a broken one, which is why checking the validity window is worth doing before you spend time on settings.

Is Airalo better than Holafly?

They are built differently rather than one being better. Holafly sells unlimited plans with a daily hotspot cap and fair use throttling. Airalo sells fixed data amounts you can watch go down. Which suits you depends on whether you would rather not think about a counter or would rather see exactly what is left.

If you would rather not go through this again

Genuinely, we hope the steps above got you back online, and none of them require you to change provider. Fix it, enjoy your trip.
