Getting mobile data in Russia used to be easy: land, buy a cheap SIM at the airport, done. In 2026 almost none of that is true anymore. Most big travel eSIM brands quietly dropped Russia years ago, buying a local SIM now involves biometrics and a government portal account, and several apps you use every day are blocked. Travelers deserve a straight answer about what still works, so here it is.

The short answer
A travel eSIM bought before you fly is now the only realistic way for a visitor to get mobile data in Russia. Local SIMs require registration that takes days, and Western roaming mostly does not work there at all. First, who still covers Russia at all
This surprises almost everyone: Airalo has not sold a Russia plan since 2022, and Saily has never offered one. If you search their sites for Russia you will come up empty. Old blog posts claiming otherwise are out of date. Of the well known brands, only a few still serve Russia, and their prices reflect the lack of competition: Nomad charges $25 for 10 GB, Holafly sells unlimited from about $7.90 a day, and smaller names like Yesim sit in between.

Option 1: a local SIM card, and why tourists cannot really get one
On paper, Russian mobile data is some of the cheapest in the world: MTS, Megafon, Beeline and Tele2 sell monthly bundles of 15 to 30 GB for the equivalent of $7 to $13. In practice, since 2025 a foreigner buying any Russian SIM needs a local SNILS number, a confirmed account on the Gosuslugi government portal, biometrics recorded at a Russian bank, and a notarized translation of their passport. The SIM also gets locked to one device.
Read that list again and picture doing it in your first jet lagged morning in Moscow. It is not a queue, it is a bureaucratic project that takes days. The quick airport SIM counter for tourists is gone. Every serious travel guide now says the same thing: sort your data out before you arrive.
Option 2: roaming from home
Mostly a dead end. Verizon and AT&T exclude Russia from their travel passes, and T-Mobile lists it as not eligible for international roaming benefits. Some European carriers still technically roam there at painful per megabyte rates. Treat roaming as unavailable and you will be planning correctly.
Option 3: a travel eSIM for Russia

The three things every visitor should know before landing
1. The 24 hour cooling off period. Since late 2025, any foreign SIM or eSIM connecting to a Russian network for the first time can have its mobile data blocked for up to 24 hours. It is a security measure and it applies to every roaming product, not just ours. Carriers send an SMS with a link to verify and unblock early, and it often clears faster. Plan for it: connect as soon as you land, keep your hotel wifi details handy for the first evening, and do not panic if data takes time to wake up. It comes right on its own.
2. Some apps are blocked. As of 2026, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube are blocked in Russia, and Telegram can be slow. Russians themselves use VPNs, and visitors do the same: install and test two or three VPN apps before you arrive, because the app stores may not cooperate once you are inside the country. Telegram remains the main messenger that partly works without help.
3. Mobile internet has off days. Russian cities sometimes switch mobile data off across whole districts for security reasons, occasionally for days. Wifi keeps working during these shutdowns, so cafes and hotels become everyone's internet. This affects every SIM and eSIM equally. It is simply how the country works right now, and knowing it in advance beats discovering it live.
None of this is a reason to skip the Hermitage. It is a reason to arrive prepared, with your eSIM installed, a VPN tested, and offline maps downloaded.
How much data do you need in Russia?
- Light use (maps, Telegram, translation): 1 GB a week, $1.67 with us.

Budget a little extra: VPN traffic adds overhead to everything you do, typically 10 to 20 percent.
How to set up your Russia eSIM
