Armenia SIM Cards for Tourists 2026

Flights into Yerevan have a habit of landing at three in the morning. You come out at Zvartnots, the taxi app wants data before it will quote a price, and the operator booths sit there with their lights on. This guide covers what a tourist SIM really costs in 2026, which desk is where in the terminal, the passport rule, how the signal holds on the road to Dilijan and Tatev, and what your data does at the Georgian border.

What a week of data costs in Armenia in 2026

All three Armenian operators sell a visitor plan at the same price: 2,500 AMD for 15 days of unlimited internet with calls and texts. At the Central Bank of Armenia rate of 4 September 2026, 363.85 AMD to the dollar, that is about $6.87. The differences sit in the small print.

Add the plastic on top. The SIM is AMD 100, or free with a plan, with a minimum first credit of AMD 1,000, so the counter spend is nearer 3,500 AMD. Ask for the visitor plan by name, or you will be shown monthly bundles instead.

Zvartnots airport SIM desks: which booth is where

Zvartnots publishes its own shop list, putting all three operators on the first floor of the Arrival Hall, open around the clock. The catch is the Ucom booth, which sits inside the Sterile Zone, so it is behind you once you walk out.

Travel writers put the Team and Viva-MTS shops right where you exit baggage claim, Viva to the right. Airport pricing is argued about: a local on Tripadvisor says it matches the city, a Yerevan blog from 2022 says it is higher. Nobody publishes a markup.

Viva-MTS TOURIST UNLIM and the roaming catch

TOURIST UNLIM is the plan most visitors are handed, and on coverage it is the strongest. The line that matters is on the tariff page: the plan is explicitly not available in roaming. Your unlimited data stops at the Georgian border.

It is not prolonged automatically, which suits a short trip. Once the allowances go, Viva-MTS bills 15 AMD a minute to Viva numbers, 35 AMD to other networks and 30 AMD per MB for data. Move to another prepaid plan and you cannot return.

Ucom uWelcome: unlimited with a cap, and a charge that returns

uWelcome is the same 2,500 AMD for 15 days, with 300 minutes that include the USA and Canada. Ucom is open about the fair use rule: after 200 GB the speed drops to 512 kbps, which on a holiday is theoretical.

The part that costs people money is the ending. Ucom says the inclusions reactivate on their own after 15 days and the 2,500 AMD fee is charged again if the balance allows. Fly home with money on that account and the plan renews into a phone in a drawer.

Team Telecom: Be Free 2500 or the Welcome starter

Team sells the same 15 day package as Be Free 2500, and it is the most generous on calls: 2,000 minutes to Armenian networks plus the USA, Canada, Beeline Russia and T2, and 500 SMS. It also has the sharpest tail. If the balance holds 5,000 AMD when the 15 days end, it renews as a 30 day package at 5,000 AMD. Keep the balance under that.

For a longer stay, Be Free Unlimit runs from 3,500 AMD and fixed data starts at 20 GB for 2,500 AMD. If you only need a number, the Welcome tariff page lists calls at 49 AMD a minute and internet at 50 AMD per MB, worth reading twice.

Passport registration, and why a local eSIM still means a queue

SIM registration against a passport is mandatory in Armenia, at the airport and in the city. It takes about ten minutes while the clerk scans the document into the carrier system. There is no Armenian number without it.

Going eSIM with a local operator does not get you out of it. Viva-MTS issues its eSIM only at a service centre, in person, with a passport: existing subscribers pay AMD 500 including VAT to swap from plastic, a new subscription pays only for the plan, and the QR code comes by email or on paper. Ucom is the same, with your passport, and it will not work on a phone locked to another operator.

Team is the exception on paper. Its eSIM page offers the My Team app, a Team shop or the eShop, but it does not say whether a foreign passport holder can finish that purchase remotely. The practical reading: a local eSIM here buys the same queue as a plastic SIM, and only a travel eSIM bought before you fly skips the counter.

Coverage on the road: Dilijan, Lake Sevan and Tatev

Coverage is excellent in the valleys where people live and thin the moment you climb. The regulator's 2020 count put 4G+ from at least one operator in 100 percent of settlements, with Viva-MTS reaching 99.9 percent of populated areas, Ucom 88.2 percent and Team 55.5 percent.

Viva-MTS switched on 5G+ in Yerevan and six regions in July 2024: Lori, Tavush for Dilijan, Shirak, Gegharkunik for Lake Sevan, Kotayk and Aragatsotn. Travellers report the gaps in predictable places, the canyons on the drive into Dilijan, the eastern shore of Sevan, and long silent runs around Tatev. No operator fixes that, so download offline maps.

Will your Armenian SIM work in Georgia?

Yes, but not on the tourist plan and not cheaply. All three operators switch to roaming rates the moment you cross, and TOURIST UNLIM is excluded altogether. Here is what they publish.

Viva-MTS also lists incoming calls in Georgia at 175 AMD a minute and calls to Armenia at 880 AMD. A community wiki reports a Viva-MTS office open around the clock at the Bagratashen crossing, though the operator's site does not confirm it. Buying before you fly: the Viva-MTS route without the counter
