eSIM for Mongolia

The smart move is to buy and install your eSIM while you are still at home on your own wifi. You pick a plan, scan one QR code, and the eSIM sits quietly on your phone. It does not start counting your data yet. It only kicks in when you land in Mongolia and the phone finds the Mobicom signal.

Doing this early means you walk out of the plane already connected. No hunting for a SIM counter, no swapping tiny plastic cards while you balance your bags. First check your phone supports eSIM. iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer all work. Your phone also needs to be carrier unlocked.

How much data you need depends on what kind of trip you are taking. A weekend in Ulaanbaatar for meetings, food, and a museum or two runs light. The 1 GB for 7 days plan at $4.48 will usually carry you if you save heavy video for the hotel wifi.

Most travelers who stay a week or two and post photos, use maps, and make video calls home should look at the 3 GB for 15 days plan at $12.88 or the 3 GB for 30 days plan at $14.13. Chinggis Khaan International Airport sits about 50 km south of Ulaanbaatar, so you will likely have a drive or a transfer ahead of you. Turn your phone off airplane mode in the arrivals hall and give it a minute. Your MegaEsim line should pick up Mobicom on its own.

If nothing happens after a few minutes, do two quick checks. Make sure data roaming is switched on for the MegaEsim line in your settings. That sounds odd, but a travel eSIM needs roaming turned on to work. Then pick the MegaEsim line as your data line. A restart fixes most first time hiccups.

Once you are connected, take one minute to control which line uses data. Set your MegaEsim eSIM as the line for data and leave your normal home number for calls and texts only. Turn data roaming off on your home number so it cannot quietly rack up charges.

Download your offline Google Maps area for Ulaanbaatar and any region you plan to visit before you go anywhere. Mongolia is huge and signal thins out fast outside towns. Having the map saved offline means you can still find your ger camp or trailhead even with one weak bar.

Inside Ulaanbaatar the Mobicom network is strong and fast, easily good enough for video calls, maps, and uploads. Tourist spots near the capital like Gorkhi Terelj National Park and the giant Chinggis Khaan statue at Tsonjin Boldog also hold a solid signal most of the time.

Once you head into the countryside the picture changes. In the Gobi Desert, around Kharkhorin, and out near Lake Khovsgol you will often drop to slower speeds or lose signal between settlements. Coverage tends to return when you reach a town or soum center. This is normal in Mongolia for every network, not a fault with your eSIM. Plan to do your big uploads when you roll back into a town.

Keep an eye on your usage in your phone settings as the trip goes on. Long days of maps and music eat more than you expect, especially on multi day countryside tours where you lean on your phone for navigation.

If you are running low, you do not need a new QR code. You can buy another MegaEsim Mongolia plan and add it, so a traveler who started on the 3 GB for 15 days plan can top up with a 5 GB for 30 days at $21.35 mid trip. A travel eSIM also beats hunting for a physical SIM in a small town, where the shop may be closed or short on stock.

On your last day in Mongolia you do not have to do anything special with the eSIM. There is no card to return and nothing to cancel. When your plan runs out or you reach your data limit, it simply stops. You will not be charged again.

When you get home, switch your data line back to your normal number and turn its roaming off if you had changed it. You can leave the old MegaEsim profile on your phone or delete it from your settings. If Mongolia is on your route again later, you can just buy a fresh plan on the same phone.
