eSIM for Republic of Congo

The eSIM connects to Airtel, which has the widest 3G and 4G coverage in the country. Airtel is the network most locals and travelers rely on, and it reaches the most towns.

You do not pick the network by hand. When you land in Brazzaville or Pointe-Noire, your phone finds Airtel on its own and connects. There is nothing to choose in a menu.

For a few days of checking WhatsApp, email, and Google Maps, 1 GB at $6.10 is usually enough. Texting, calls over WhatsApp, and the odd map search do not eat much data.

If you are staying a week or two, or you stream music and upload photos, go for the 3 GB plan at $17.30. Heavy video streaming uses data fast, so if that is your habit, use hotel WiFi for movies and save the eSIM data for getting around.

Coverage is best in Brazzaville and in Pointe-Noire, the economic hub about 500 km to the southwest. In the business districts and around the main hotels of both cities, 4G handles maps, WhatsApp calls, and browsing without trouble.

Outside the two big cities the signal gets weaker. If you head toward places like the Diosso Gorges, the beaches near Pointe-Noire, or Conkouati National Park with its forests, expect patchy or slow data. Download your maps and any key info while you still have a strong signal in town.

After you buy, you get a QR code by email. On WiFi at home, open your phone settings, go to the mobile or cellular section, and choose to add an eSIM or data plan. Scan the QR code and the plan installs in about a minute.

Set up the eSIM before you fly, while you have steady WiFi. Do not delete it once it is installed. You only scan the code one time.

When you arrive at Maya-Maya International Airport in Brazzaville, go into your settings and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. This is normal for travel eSIMs and is needed for the plan to work. Your home number stays off, so you will not get charged by your usual carrier.

Within a minute or two your phone should show Airtel and connect. The airport sits close to the city center, so you can order a ride or open your map as soon as you walk out.

A local SIM in Congo means going to a kiosk, showing your passport, and going through SIM registration, which is strictly enforced. The airport booths can keep odd hours and may be closed if you land late.

With the eSIM you skip all of that. It is set up before you arrive, there is no paperwork, and you keep your own phone number active for any texts you still need. For most short trips it is the simpler choice.

You need a phone that supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier. Most recent iPhones, Google Pixels, and Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM. If you are not sure, check your phone settings for an add eSIM option, or look up your model online.

If your phone has both a physical SIM slot and eSIM, you can keep your normal SIM in for calls and use the eSIM for data in Congo at the same time. That way you stay reachable on your home number while using cheaper local data.
