The airport SIM counter, or how to pay $50 for $20 of data
Istanbul Airport's SIM counters are famous, and not in a good way. The same tourist packages that cost around 1,200 lira in a city shop sell for 1,800 to 3,200 lira at the airport, a markup of 50 to 70 percent. Twenty gigabytes with Vodafone at the airport runs about $70. The independent resellers scattered around arrivals are worse still. Everyone is tired after the flight, nobody knows the fair price yet, and the counters know both things.
If you want a local SIM, buy it from an official operator store in the city, never at the airport. Better yet, land with data already working and skip the decision entirely.
The 120 day phone tax nobody warns you about
Turkey has a rule with real teeth: a foreign phone using a Turkish SIM card gets blocked from all Turkish networks 120 days after it first connects, unless you register the device and pay the registration fee. That fee in 2026 is 54,258 lira, which is about $1,263. Not a typo. It went up nearly 19 percent this year, and the old dual SIM workarounds were closed too.
Short trips are safe, the clock only bites past 120 days. But here is the part that matters for snowbirds, remote workers and anyone doing a long Turkish season: the rule applies to local SIM cards. Turkey is not in the EU roaming zone, and the UK carriers treat it as rest of world too. That means 6 to 8 pounds per day from the UK, $10 to $12 a day on American travel passes, and a family of four on a ten day holiday can burn 200 to 300 pounds on roaming alone.
