The Riviera looks like Greece did thirty years ago, dinner costs half of what it does across the border, and the numbers back the hype: visitor arrivals have almost doubled since 2019, making it the fastest growing destination on the Mediterranean. Then travelers land in Tirana, switch their phone on, and meet the surprise nobody warned them about.
We compared every way to get mobile data in Albania in 2026: local SIM cards from Vodafone and One, roaming from home, and travel eSIMs from all the big brands. There is one trap that catches even experienced European travelers, so let us start there.
The short answer
Albania is not in the EU, so your EU plan's free roaming does not work there, and neither does the UK version. The EU roaming trap, explained
This catches thousands of visitors every summer. Your Italian, German or Dutch SIM roams free across the EU, so you assume the Balkans work the same. They do not. Albania sits outside the Roam Like at Home zone, which means the moment your phone connects in Tirana you are on international rates.
The UK carriers are no kinder: their Europe passes mostly exclude Albania too, and the add on rates run 5 to 8 pounds per day. American carriers charge $10 to $12 a day for their travel passes. One viral story last year involved an $847 roaming bill from a single Albanian holiday. Brussels keeps promising to fold Albania into EU roaming eventually, but as of 2026 it has not happened. Until it does, every smart visitor brings their own data.
Mobile internet in Albania: what you are working with
Here is a fact that instantly dates most guides you will read: Albania has only two mobile networks now, Vodafone Albania and One Albania. The old third carrier, ALBtelecom, was merged into One back in 2023, yet half the internet still recommends it. If a guide lists three Albanian carriers, close the tab, its prices are stale too.
Both networks cover the places you are actually going: Tirana, Durres, Berat, Gjirokaster and the whole Riviera from Dhermi down to Ksamil. Speeds are honest 4G, with 5G appearing in the bigger tourist towns. The one region where coverage genuinely runs out is the Accursed Mountains in the north: Theth has barely any signal and the famous Theth to Valbona hike is mostly offline. Option 1: buying a local SIM card in Albania
Local SIMs are a decent deal in Albania if you want huge amounts of data. Both carriers run 24 hour kiosks in the Tirana airport arrivals hall, passport required by law, cards accepted:
- Vodafone tourist packs: about $24 for 40 GB over 15 days, or about $31 for 100 GB over 21 days.
- One tourist packs: nearly identical, about $26 to $29 for the same tiers.
- Regular prepaid from a city shop is cheaper still, around $18 for 10 GB with unlimited calls, but the airport kiosks do not advertise those.
The catches are familiar: the airport kiosk queue after a long flight, a registration form with your passport, a markup on the tourist branded packs, and a plan locked to one network in a country where the other one might be stronger at your beach. If you are staying a month and streaming every night, the 100 GB pack is real value. For a one or two week holiday, you will not use a tenth of it.

Get the local SIM if you are staying three weeks or more and want a mountain of data with unlimited local calls. The 100 GB tourist packs are genuinely good, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
Get the eSIM if you are on a normal holiday. It costs less than the airport packs for the data you will actually use, it works the moment the wheels touch down, it connects to both networks instead of one, and there is no queue, no form and no surprise on your home bill.
